This engine was an in-line 4 cylinder available in 1.8 and 2 liter displacements. In this sense, this engine marks the return of the propeller house, after almost 25 years, of a 2-liter unit split into 4 cylinders. The latest was the 2-liter unit of the M10 family, fitted until 1977 on the BMW 320 and BMW 520.

This engine replaces the two M43 and M44 engines. The new engine is characterized by the presence of the new VANOS double variable valve timing system, which acts on both the intake and exhaust valves. In any case, the distribution was double camshaft in head driven by chain and 4 valves per cylinder. Still with regard to distribution, this engine introduces the Valvetronic system, which, working together with the double VANOS, ensures a continuous variation of the timing of the two camshafts according to the engine load. Power was adBosch DME ME9.2 electronic injection.
